access to financial literacy programs and lesson plans for adults and children. If members are involved in a financial literacy program (that can be utilized by other bankers)

2008 MBA Financial Literacy Award Winners
- Old Mission Bank, Sault Sainte Marie, is involved in two financial literacy workshops.
They held a program called Life Skills and visited local seventh grade students to teach
them about how banks work and investments. They also presented high school seniors with
the top 10 hints for financial success during their Senior Smarts program.
- Citizens National Bank, Cheboygan, reached 206 individuals through their financial
literacy efforts. They held sessions on resume building, interviewing skills and what
to do with an accounting degree. Bankers also gave bank tours to elementary-aged students
and opened a mock bank in a fifth grade classroom.
- Mercantile Bank of Michigan, Grand Rapids, has 30 bankers involved in giving
financial literacy lessons. Through their efforts, 2,487 citizens received financial
literacy lessons. Mercantile Bank of Michigan participated in Teach Children to Save
Day, Get Smart About Credit, Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement and Guiding Light Missions
- IBT Bancorp, Inc., Mt. Pleasant, is involved in 13 financial literacy programs.
They have visited many local schools to give financial presentations and have held
financial sessions at the Clare County Community Senior Center, Mt. Pleasant Chamber
and Michigan Small Business Tech Center.
- Seaway Community Bank, Saint Clair, reached 1,700 residents through their financial
literacy efforts. Forty employees visited schools during Teach Children to Save Day, Get
Smart About Credit and helped in opening five in-school banks.
- Chemical Bank, Owosso, holds many financial literacy presentations at local schools.
They have reached 550 individuals through their efforts and have held sessions at the local
YCMA, Owosso High School, Genesee County Housing Fair, Baker College, Coronna Library, Perry
Elementary, Morrice High School and Shaftsborgo Elementary.
- MainStreet Savings Bank, Hastings, reached 3,134 individuals through their financial
literacy efforts. They are involved in junior varsity and varsity savings club, school banking
programs, 4-H loan program, Junior Achievement and community education classes.
- County National Bank, Hillsdale, has 35 employees that give financial literacy presentations.
They reached 1,483 individuals during their financial sessions. They presented information on Medicaid,
identity theft and during Teach Children to Save Day and Get Smart About Credit.
- Peoples State Bank, Madison Heights, holds 24 programs on financial literacy. They are greatly
involved in junior achievement and hold numerous financial programs on identity theft, direct deposit
and homebuyer workshops.
